Bramley Rugby League Community Club was formed very deliberately in 2000 on a different model of ownership to that which had prevailed under previous Bramley clubs.
The overriding principle was that the club should be “owned by the community” in which it was located. Further to this principle of “community ownership” the new club is committed to making a contribution to the general well-being of that host community, i.e. the immediate Bramley and the broader West Leeds communities.
As an overriding principle the club hopes that members of those communities will participate fully in the club and its’ activities, whether by purchasing a share, attending games and supporting the teams, or by becoming involved in the running of the club, as a Volunteer or Committee member. In return Bramley RLCC makes the following commitment to support the community in the following ways:
Community well-being and community based organisations Supporting the activities of other community based organisations, whose remit is contributing to the health and well-being of the community, whether through social, educational, sporting or healthcare activities. This may include for example supporting local businesses through inward investment, purchasing locally, where this is feasible in terms of the particular needs of the club, and supporting “shop local” initiatives.
Participation of young people in rugby league and sports It commits to supporting, where resources allow, junior rugby league, in the area, and without, and other related activities, that help increase the participation of young people in rugby league in particular and sporting activities in general.
The club does not intend to directly compete with other junior rugby league clubs in the area, but rather to cooperate with them, though reserving the right to organise directly rugby league activities for which there is no provision. This could include activities targeted to particular groups that have special needs, or are under represented, be it economic, social, disability etc. In the medium term the club will look to develop an Academy team to feed into the senior team, and into the professional ranks of the game. The club would look to cooperate not only with other amateur clubs in this area, but with those involved in developing facilities and involvement of the area’s young people.
Community identity, cohesion and history It commits to supporting those organisations and activities that seek to maintain the sense of community and identity of Bramley and other distinct and historic communities in West Leeds, supporting events like the Bramley Carnival, and the Bramley History Society.
Inclusion It commits to supporting through the above the inclusion of all members of that community, irrespective of age, gender, ethnic origin, disability, social or employment condition, in the club and its’ activities and in the community, whether as players, shareholders, volunteers or simply spectators.
Supporters’ voices and ownership in sport As a club owned by its’ supporters it commits to supporting and promoting the efforts of all supporters to have a say in the ownership and running of their clubs, and of the efforts of organisations that exist to promote such values, such as Supporters Direct and the Rugby League Supporters Association.
Co-operative principles As a co-operatively owned organisation it commits to supporting the values of cooperation within the community, and those organisations that are set up on similar principles, as co-operatives.
Longer term, resources and facilities’ permitting, the club would like to engender such a sense of ownership and involvement, that it becomes a community that develops activities of a non rugby kind, outside of match or training days, so that it becomes a community that is open and welcoming seven days a week. |
